Track one — the rescue

“Seventy bucks and a cardboard box, riding shotgun home with me. You cried at every red light, so I sang you something off-key.”

Track two — the ordinary days

“Five-fifteen, every evening, somebody’s watching for my headlights. Eleven years, never missed one, like I was worth the wait.”

Track three — the goodbye

“Some loves don’t leave when they leave. They just wait at the window.”

Liner notes

Printed inside the sleeve.

Gus was found in the last kennel on the left, sitting on a torn blanket, and he chose his person before she had finished walking past.

He cost seventy dollars. He was worth everything.

For thirteen years he held the ordinary days together — a face between bent blinds at 5:15, a stolen rotisserie chicken, a coward about vacuums and a stone through thunderstorms, an unasked, unpaid guard outside a nursery door.

On his last morning the windows were down, because he loved the wind more than anything, and there was a cheeseburger, plain, because rules are for dogs who aren’t dying, and there was a hand on his head saying the only thing that ever needed saying.

He was a good boy. The whole way home.
